What Drives Me

As a young accountant, I was always fascinated by the ways in which clients solved their accounting and financial reporting challenges. Although, looking back, that fascination surely had its roots in frustration.  I performed many financial consolidations using Excel templates from previous auditors.

Back then, the legitimate tools were few, costly, and complex.  Today, they're plentiful, cheap, and marketed directly to end-users.  On the one hand, this is a fantastic development which empowers small and medium sized companies to compete at levels never thought possible.  Unfortunately, many of these companies - especially when in an early hyper-growth mode - choose a path of least resistance for many valid reasons:

- Cost constraints
- Lack of bandwith while trying to scale
- Incompatible skills

These early decisions can lead to an enduring legacy of locked-in, multi-year subscriptions, duplicated data, and throttled efficiency and scalability.

But, it doesn't have to be this way.  Helping companies navigate these critical transitions and optimizing existing solutions is where I thrive.  I'm happiest when bringing people together, solving problems, and building durable accounting and financial systems.

Work Examples

These examples are just a few of my favorites, and I authored all content shown.

While they've been sanitized for any identifying data or proprietary information, these examples remain true to the actual work product.

I've chosen these, because each one challenged me and ultimately delivered great benefit to the stakeholders.

NetSuite GL Account Determination Logic

SuiteGL Customization

Business Problem

Out of the box, NetSuite has limited and inflexible GL account determination logic.  The item master record specifies the related GL accounts to be used during transaction processing with no other factors taken into account.  Further, these GL accounts cannot be changed on the item master record without changing every historical transaction for that item.

NetSuite Historical USD Override

Business Problem

Despite NetSuite's ability to store historical currency translation rates per period per parent/child relationship, this mechanism doesn’t natively support the migration of multiple accounts when they each need to have a different effective historical rate as of a specific migration point-in-time.  Certain balance sheet accounts, including the Currency Translation Adjustment account, will be incorrect after historical migration.

PMO and Project Portfolio Management

Business Problem

In light of the organization's current growth stage, there are no consistent methodologies or tools to facilitate the prioritization and ongoing management of business systems projects.   These constraints are not unique to the company and include:

  • Skill deficit and soft executive sponsorship for a formalized in-house PMO
  • Lack of intake process for proposed initiatives
  • Lack of methodology to objectively evaluate new initiatives for priorization
  • Ineffective and insufficient project management tools in use (Excel, Powerpoint, etc)

Without portfolio-level visibility using objective measurements, IT is left to negotiate project timing and scope with executives who are often frustrated when projects slip or are or rescheduled.
